Aggravated Assault Arrest:

On December 29th at 8:30 am, an officer responded to the area of 3rd and Palou in an attempt to locate a Chronicle newspaper delivery van that had been reported stolen several hours prior in the Mission District. The vehicle had been tracked to the area via GPS. The officer located the van driving on Palou and attempted to effect a traffic stop, but the driver failed to yield and took off. The officer pursued the vehicle at which point the suspect/driver of the stolen van accelerated. The officer sped up as well to keep up when the suspect/driver suddenly slammed on his brakes, causing the officer to narrowly miss colliding with the rear of the van. As the officer veered to the side of the stolen vehicle, the suspect/driver swerved the van towards the unit in an attempt to smash the patrol car. The officer managed to avoid the collision and continued to pursue the van. The suspect/driver attempted the brake maneuver a second time and again tried to hit the patrol car, unsuccessfully.

The chase led officers on Hwy 101 and onto the San Mateo Bridge with the suspect/driver and his passenger throwing items out of the windows of the stolen vehicle at the patrol cars the entire time. CHP took over the pursuit that continued onto I-880 and into San Leandro. Units from that jurisdiction got involved in the pursuit. The suspect/driver, at one point, slowed down enough to allow his passenger to get out of the van with a bicycle. He attempted to peddle away but was later apprehended. The suspect/driver continued his attempt to evade the police until he drove into a cul-de-sac and got out of the van. He hopped over fences, through several yards, before being apprehended while hiding in a wooded area. Both suspects were booked on numerous charges which included aggravated assault, auto theft, conspiracy and felony evading charges. (SFPD Case No. 141092978)
